Calling All Peoples to Worship

Authentic worship should always be culturally relevant. A person should not be expected to undergo a cultural lobotomy to become a worshiper. Nor should he or she be expected to learn a new culture in order to worship in the "right way." If anything, those of us who know Jesus should have the maturity to leave our comfort zone to meet people where they are.

Cultural diversity in worship glorifies God. It reflects a creative God who created many different cultures for His pleasure. Diversity in worship also undermines any cultural pride and places our focus on the grace of God extended toward all people.

In Revelation 7:11 we see a picture of worship in heaven. It is not a picture of one, non-distinctive super-culture. Instead, John makes the observation that this display of peoples is from every nation, tribes, and language. Now we must simply call them to fulfill their God-given purpose. No wonder the psalmist was confident to proclaim, "May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you.!" (Ps 67:3)

Through the generations, wars have been fought over ethnic divisions. And as the world moves more toward a global community, people are drawn to discover their ethnic identity. Satan is ready to exploit cultural differences to bring violence and destruction. The church must be prepared for the challenge by being a place of reconciliation that gives dignity to all peoples.

Scripture gives two pictures of what we can expect in these last days. I believe one is what happens in the world, and the other is what happens in the church. "Nation shall rise against nation." (Matt 24:7) But in the middle of all that, I see a picture of the church, with every cultural united in worship of the Lamb of God.

Today we have an unprecedented privilege. Never before has there been such an opportunity to call the nations to come to worship Him. First, we must be worshipers ourselves. Then let us say to the nations, "Here is your God!"

The Hindu Mosaic

Hinduism is one of the great religions of the world, with over 90 percent of them living in India. Many countries of the world have substantial Hindu populations, Although, the type of Hinduism practiced by its people varies according to location and social position.

About 80 percent of India's huge population is contained in the villages. In the villages, Hinduism has a strong animistic flavor. Worshipers live in fear of the gods, and their worship is intended to appease the spirits. Because Hinduism is a social system, a philosophy of life, and a religion that easily absorbs other cultures and aspects of other religions, it has often been resistant to Christian missions. Yet, in certain parts of India, there have been dramatic movements of whole tribes of people into the kingdom of God.

Christians must make a special efforts to cross the cultural thresholds that divide people. Missions have been most successful in areas where Christians have been sensitive to local customs and traditions. The greatest challenge of reaching India lies in the fact that evangelism to the Hindus is not evangelism to a single, easily defined group of people. The many cultures or "people groups" are separated by barriers of caste, customs, food, geography, religious tradition, and language.

Approaching the maze-like task of developing mission strategies to the Hindu world is as complex as the Hindu world itself.

The Challenge!

Let's expedite the coming of Christ by fulfilling the Great Commission. We have no time to waste, but instead, we must be single-minded and involved in reaching the lost at home and abroad. Often we lose the passion for souls due to our lack of faith, lack of knowledge of the Word, and lack of power to defeat the will of the evil powers around us.

Listen to the word's of John Wesley, who cried that, "The world is my parish." He said, "You have nothing to do but save souls. Therefore, spend and be spent in this work. It is not your business to preach so many times; but to save as many souls as you can; to bring as many sinners as you possibly can to repentance; and with all your power to build them up in that holiness, without which they cannot see the Lord."

May the Lord continue to help us, not just to read and know the truth, but to obey His commands to grow ourselves in Christ, and to reach others for Him.

Help us continue this ministry to the lost and hurting of India by giving what you can Now.
